I’m so glad you’re here!
Welcome to Flax & Sugar! I’m Mikyla, the recipe creator, content developer, and the one probably covered in flour. I live in a tiny NYC studio and spend most of my time in the kitchen (partially because it’s in the same room as where I sleep, but hey, that’s life in the Big Apple!) I like to play in the kitchen. Correction, I love it!
My story
Ever since I was young, you could find me a complete mess mixing up some concoction in our old farmhouse kitchen. And dipping my finger into the bowl to sneak bites of raw cookie dough, despite numerous salmonella warnings from my grandmother. There are quite a few memorable moments, as I nearly burnt the house down and was formally “banned” from using the oven for a few years, that I’ll humor you with later. But if there is a will there’s a way and nevertheless, I came up with many no-bake recipes.
The kitchen has always been my home. Warm, aromatic, and cozy. As I sift through life, baking’s been a way to disconnect and connect. To escape from the world, create magic, and then share good food with the ones I love. After choosing to eat plant-based, I reinvented family recipes to suit my new lifestyle. Flax & Sugar was created with the philosophy that eating plant-based shouldn’t be a sacrifice for flavor. What started as a way to continue to eat cake, has turned into so much more. I hope you enjoy these recipes, that they fill your home with love, and bring people together because, that’s what life is all about, connection.
Behind the blog
The name Flax & Sugar came from frantic late-night runs to the grocery store. I seem to always be out of one thing or another and commonly like to bake at night?! On my way to the store, I would jam a shopping list in my pocket. Later on, I’d find scratch pieces of paper tucked into the pocket of my jeans and they almost always had two things written on it; Flax and Sugar.
This blog focuses on a plant-forward lifestyle, using mostly whole foods to create a foundation for a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle. You’ll find all kinds of recipes here that are both nourishing and realistic, savory and sweet! Some of them packed full of superfoods, while others are more nostalgic. They will transport you back to a time when the word “calorie”, wasn’t in your vocabulary. I hope you find inspiration to get out of your comfort zone, to grow, and to dig into life deeper…one spoonful at a time.
